About years ago most feared that the subject called history will remain as a dead subject that no one would dare to read, LEARN what is written and hidden among the ruins and the deepest sides of the Samuddraya like lakes and on the pages of the Chronicles and inscriptions other than the things written on the tombs of people of our past, their hopes, aims and courage and desires, patriotic of mind pages, sacrifices of inner minds, relationships with their neighbours
It is not true, there is nothing to be feared of burying the subject without even trying to read its pages of the history properly. I understand that still there are personalities who love to re read and learn and handing them what they learned and understand over to the generations of future using many methods other than encouraging the students to learn the subject academically
movies are one of such creations that some like to use not just as a 'reminder to the world' but also as away to attract youngsters in order to protect the values and demands, norms and courage that what a civilization should own or from what is inherited from the past, ancestors
from the OLD CINEMA i have watched some of the creations from the directors, who tried to paint the pages of silver screen via some of their creations created based on the incidents of history,Weera puran Appu, Matalan some of those comes to my mind this moment. i am sure that there are few other creations pardon me for not mentioning them all here
Mr. Somaratne Dissanayake ( SIRI PERAKUM) and Mr. Jackson Anthony ( ABHA) these directors too were focused on some of the pages of the history and wrote their poems on the screens of the 'directors' media, cinema based on the incidents, characters they could easily understand and respect
there are directors who touched the modern pages of history but let me talk about them on another day like riots and significant events and incidents of recent history specifically focusing POLITICAL INCIDENTS and events at least some of the directors tried to expand their thinking based on the incidents of past the way that they read and see them, understand them
Mr. Sanath Abeysekara is a different director. he basically touches ( so far) ' the core, significant events of history SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO BUDDHISM
MAHINDAGAMANAYA is one of his beautiful creations i guess i took a little while to appreciate the movie i watched from the same director of SRI DALADA GAMANAYA, this is his current creation i watched it couple of days ago
it is never easy to redesign something that had happened in the past it is totally different to doing something totally as a new creation the director has to do a lot of home work , reading the relevant pages of the history understanding the socio, cultural and political contexts of that era. not a single thing that director or the script writer could forget when redesigning history as a movie creation
You have succeed in your efforts Mr. Abeysekara
The clothes , the vocabularies, vocal patterns, thinking of people, beliefs and values norms of the societies discussed all has to be considered not just dialogues and clips or scenes right 'editing' to is essential, i know when scripting your thoughts
Reading is something what ever you like not juts the pages of history even you need to be careful reader you can't misread history there comes the difference in reading the pages of history accurately and then scripting it justifying all what you read therefore i believe creating is a different thing and is a big task, huge work load specially when you are dealing with CINEMA
i believe Mr. Abeysekara has always tried to do justice to the incident and event of history for that he had to use various techniques of cinema to say it to his viewers
i believe like you succeed in your television drama series ( i have watched most of them, and you were basically focusing 'family' am i right, i had a very cordial relationship with television back then compared to now) you would definitely create another creation using another page of history for sure
i do not know to write critiques what i write here is my inner feelings i truly love the creations of cinema it catches my heart and sole because it is a very live and moving , very touchy form of ART , LITERATURE
the cinema will have to SURVIVE AND SUSTAIN therefore YOUR CONTRIBUTION IS VALUED BY THIS FOOTPATH and also i write this note ON BEHALF OF THE VIEWERS OF THE WORLD CINEMA
PLEASE ACCEPT THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM THIS PATH, FOOTPATH
WISH YOU A CREATIVEFUL LIFE AHEAD!
No path is a path if you see no people walking or moving here and there. There is very little that you can learn if there are no people around. Yes it is true that lonely paths also teach you things but that are different things. The paths provide you different pictures at different times of a day. During mornings it is very different and during dark it is unbelievably unexplainable. You see ‘no end’ point in analyzing these paths, the travelers, and the people we see, i believe.
