SANDRILLA

A Story for the kids of the world

In the ancient capital of Thambapanni, lived a brave woman with her husband. In the month of December of 170 B.C. a daughter was born to the family. Surprisingly, they named her ‘Sandrilla’, the daughter of earth and sand. She knew the mountain Pidiruthalagala and Samanala, and the piduruthalagala and the samanala too knew Sandrilla and her parents very well.

The Valley of Mahaweli knew her and her village mates and she knew them too. She knew their sighs and tears and smiles. She was a very close friend of all of them.

The day that Sandrilla was born, the mother and the father of Sandrilla went to see the soothsayer of the famous hill country and that was the tradition that the family followed since ages.

Mathematically analyzing the time and the date that the Sandrilla was born, the soothsayer predicted of something that the mother and the father of Sandrilla didn’t expect to hear. They were told of a ruthless Bandit coming to invade the village with a gang of foolish men.

“She is coming to murder Sandrilla.”

“Can you kindly educate us of the reason, why she wants to kill my innocent harmless daughter?”

“She was miss-leaded and fooled by her group of gangsters saying if you murder her you would gain a treasure and you will be able to capture the kingdom creating a conflict in the village.”

“Oh! What a pity and a disaster.”

“Master, do you think that she would be able to defeat the bandit with the help of me and my husband and with the help of other Noble men and women of our land.”

“Yes, for sure. But you must enhance her born talents and skills of fighting and encourage her to learn the meaning of not betraying her country and her men and women, her own people.”

“Yes, kind Master, I will definitely follow your kind advises.”

“And keep her away from unnecessary associations of friends and men and women, always let her associate only the wise.”

Though she was a bandit with some physical strength she had gifted no brain. And the gangsters that she was surrounded with were fools and was only fond of money and gems and treasures and never thought of their good name and they cared of no ‘humanity’.

Like the soothsayer explained, a bandit came to invade the capital of Thambapanni with her foolish headless men and women, sailed passing the silk route.

In her appearance, she looked like a demon wicked-eye no children loved her appearance and she was ‘anti-humanity’.

Brave Sandrilla was taught how to defeat the bandit by her noble masters and gurus. And she was very good in handling and using any sharp and shape sword and any wild or trained horses. And she was the best person who knew the area very well. The Bandit was miss directed and confused and weak bandit was defeated but was not easy for her to do it alone. Sandrilla using all her skills and abilities and strengths won the battle against the bandit fighting with her for weeks.

After defeating ……………the bandit and her foolish men and women were imprisoned. Sandrilla always wanted her people to enjoy true freedom and liberty.

Sandrilla, the daughter of the brave mother and the father, after defeating her ill-willed objectives of stealing the treasurers of the peasants and the dignities of her ancients, with the support of the army of her land, requesting a strong canoe from the king of her land the bandit was handed over to the king of her decaying kingdom due to her foolish activities against humanity.

The king of kingdom of the bandit was very pleased to see the bandit captured and the king was very happy with Sandrilla’s courage and sincerity and was awarded and rewarded by both kings of the two kingdoms.

Since then, Sandrilla was remembered in cold yet warm December every year as a woman with a brave heart who defeated a Bandit that the world was struggling to defeat back then.

And for the peasants it is a festival that they enjoy peacefully and the festival was known as ‘Sandrilla-festival’. And before the Sandrilla festival comes, the rich shares money and goods and food with the poor, ever since. Sandrilla’s parents too was honored by the people, since then.

Sandrilla taught the people the power of one’s own mind and courage and how the lives of the persons who disrespect humanity ends. And what would happen to the lives of the persons who always depend on the visions and missions of the foolish men and women who disrespect humanity and worship only money and treasures all day long.
